FLSP 481/581: Literature of Toledo
For the course FLST 581 taught by Stephen Luis Vilaseca, two graduate students, Monica Morales and Jessica Yandun, collaborated to produce a digital humanities project entitled “Toledo en la literatura” [Toledo in Literature]. They read “La ajorca de oro,” “El cristo de la calavera,” “El beso,” “Tres fechas,” “La voz del silencio,” and “La rosa de pasión” (Gustavo Aldolfo Bécquer), “El entierro del Conde de Orgaz” ( Pio Baroja, 1901), “Toledo” (Azorín), “El secreto de Toledo” (Mauricio Barres, 1912), “Semana Santa en Toledo” (Ramón Gómez de la Serna), “Diseño de alzado” (Pedro Laín Entralgo, 1963), “El Alcázar, asediado” (Agustín de Foxa, 1963), and Urraca (Lourdes Ortiz, 1991). With the guidance of the professor, Monica and Jessica developed a digital map of Toledo containing texts and videos about the urban sites visited and experienced by the characters of the above-mentioned literature. The texts and videos include historical and cultural information as well as insightful, thesis-driven commentaries.
