I remember on 2/14/2008 my friend called me at my apartment around 3:00pm that dreadful Thursday afternoon. She called and asked me where I was. I was at my apartment off of Normal Road. She asked me to stay there. I figured she was coming over. Instead, she told me there was a shooting on campus. I didn't completely understand what she meant, it didn't sink in immediately. I decided I would call other people to tell them. I got through to two other people, before the cellphone network completely shut down. I turned on the TV, and it didn't come on the news for about another 10 minutes after my friend told me what had happened. I knew some of my friends were near that lecture hall and I was scared that the gunman was on foot, like at Virginia Tech. No one was exactly sure what was going on. I remember I tried calling friends and family over and over again, it took several hours to get through. Normal Road was a complete disaster, people were running to their cars, leaving the area immediately. The road was completely backed up for at least three or four blocks. My grandmother finally got through to me later on in the day. She was very nervous. This wasn't the first time a loved one she had known had been near a shooting at their college campus. My uncle was attending Kent State University at the time when they had the shooting in 1970. She was relieved when I picked up the phone and told her I was OK. This tragedy definitely shook us students. But it has made us a stronger and a tighter college community. We know that we can never forget this, but we can move forward. Forward, Together, Forward.
